Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Book

Why hire a professional makeup artist?

The number one reason why you should hire a professional makeup artist for your next editorial project is simple, it lets your creative vision come to life. You're taking the time and money to create a unique concept and shoot, and there's nothing worse than looking at your photos months later and lacking confidence in the finished product.

With over a decade of industry experience in makeup, Waring Makeup has the expertise to make sure your creative vision becomes a reality. This means they can provide you with the right products to match your model's skin type, tone, and colours. It also means our expertise can highlight your model's best features and provide polish for your photoshoot. So take the easy, stress-free way of getting ready for your next creative and leave it all to your makeup artist.

I have concerns about skin sensitivity. What should I do?

During your session, one of the first questions we have for your models is if they have any skin sensitivities or allergies we should be aware of. It gives us the ability to work with them to figure out what will be the best products to use to make your project a success. Our ability to understand our client’s skin needs allows us to make sure your models will feel and look their best.

Are you experienced with all skin tones?

Absolutely! Waring Makeup prides itself on working with a diverse range of clients and can accomplish the same high-quality work for every client no matter what skin tone they have. We have a complete kit of makeup suited to work with every skin tone and a foundation for every undertone. In addition, our portfolio page showcases a wide range of diversity without clients and should help alleviate any concerns you might have when booking your makeup artist.

I have scarring on my face, and I’m worried about texture. Are you able to cover up acne or scars?

Our goal is that your makeup artist should understand what concerns you have before your application starts so we can make you feel your best. Waring Makeup strives to make sure its clients feel comfortable sharing those concerns with us and being transparent on the best way to achieve the right look for you. Our skin preparation treatments will help the makeup apply smoothly and create a lasting look, while the products we use should help cover any scars or discolourations.

Do you offer tattoo cover-ups? If so, how long does it take?

Tattoo cover-ups are one of the many services we offer for our clients. The time it will add to your appointment can vary due to the tattoo’s size, colour, location, and potential scarring. It will also cause the price of the tattoo cover-up to vary. Before booking, inquire about any possible tattoos you would like to cover up. This service requires a description of the tattoo, its location, and a photo of it ahead of your appointment.

Are you able to travel to my location?

Yes! Waring Makeup artists can travel to whatever location is easiest for clients to have their makeup done. Areas could include your home, office, studio, or alternative venues where the shoot is happening. Applicable travel fees will be applied to your quote based on the distance required to travel.

Before Your Appointment

Should I come wearing my own makeup to my appointment?

When a painter starts a new piece of art, they want to have a blank canvas. Therefore, we strongly recommend that your models have a clean bare face before their makeup session. It allows your artist to apply the skin preparation properly and create the perfect flawless look for you. Removing existing makeup prior to applying new makeup means your skin will be agitated and less likely to receive the fresh makeup properly.

What do I need to do before my makeup session?

In the weeks leading up to your shoot, you need to provide your makeup artist with images or inspirations for the type of makeup you’re looking for your models to wear. It helps your artist understand how to give you the best look possible and explain what modifications might need to be made based on other considerations.

The night before your shoot, it’s essential for your models to exfoliate their skin to help improve the skin preparation treatment, which will assist in making their makeup flow smoothly and evenly.

On the day of the shoot, just have your models come as they are, clean bare face, no makeup required!

What should I expect on the morning of the shoot?

Your makeup artist will arrive at the agreed location 15 minutes before your first scheduled application begins. This allows your artist to make sure they can set up their supplies and have proper lighting for your sessions. Ensure you have a clean designated area ready for your artist when they arrive and comfortable seating.

How long should I expect makeup to take during the shoot?

Editorial makeup can vary depending on what your creative concept is. As you're discussing your vision with your makeup artist they'll give you an idea as to what is a reasonable time frame for each model.

Typical applications for editorial makeup can range from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity.

Therefore, it’s essential to coordinate with your team a schedule that everyone can agree on to make sure no one’s makeup application runs late or needs to be shortened.

How can you make my makeup last and look good in photos?

The secret to lasting makeup starts with proper skin care and preparation before the makeup is applied. All our makeup services come with skin preparation or our premium skin preparation package to ensure your skin is ready to support a makeup application. Next is making sure studio-quality products are used that have a track record of longevity for wear, as well as avoiding any flashback mishaps during your photoshoot. Finally, using a setting spray or finishing powder will help lock in your perfect look.

If you’re nervous about looking perfect for your headshots, on-site touch-up services can be available upon request.

What brands of makeup products do you use?

While I have a wide range of products in my makeup kit, my preferred choice for studio makeup is MAC Cosmetics as they have perfected their studio product line.
