Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Book

Why hire a professional prom makeup artist?

The number one reason you should hire a professional prom makeup artist for your prom is simple: you don’t have to stress before the big night and look picture-perfect in all your photos. There’s nothing worse than getting partway through your makeup and stressing out because it doesn’t quite look right.

With over a decade of industry experience in makeup, Waring Makeup has the expertise to ensure you look your best for your prom. This means they can help you plan months in advance the right look to match your skin type, tone, and colours. This expertise also means they can highlight your best features and give you extra confidence during your magical night. So take the easy, stress-free way of getting ready for your prom and leave everything to your prom makeup artist.

I don’t usually wear a lot of makeup, do I have to for prom?

Not at all. It’s your big night, and you should feel your best for it. Makeup is about enhancing your natural features to create a look that feels like you with just a bit of polish. Leading up to your prom will ask you questions to learn about your comfort level with makeup and your expectations. Our goal is to craft the perfect look to match those needs, nothing more, nothing less.

How far in advance should I book my makeup artist?

The challenge with prom season is that it falls right around when the wedding season starts to pick up, which means many makeup artists are already booked for the day of your prom. This is why we encourage our clients to book their makeup artist as soon as they've learned the date of their prom, so they can avoid the disappointment of learning that there's no availability for their big night. The earlier you can confirm your booking, the less stress you’ll have about planning everything. In addition, it will give you more time to coordinate a trial appointment if you're looking for one and plan on what makeup will look the best once you've picked out your dress.

How important is it to book a trial?

Most of our clients won't feel the need to book a trial appointment for their prom makeup, however since prom is a once-in-a-lifetime event, if you want the peace of mind that your makeup will be flawless then a trial appointment might just be the right thing for you.

Trial appointments allow your makeup artist to work with you on any concerns you have regarding your makeup application, such as skin conditions, allergies, and comfort with wearing makeup for extended periods.

You can also book your trial appointment around other major events such as graduation photos, birthday parties, or family gatherings so you benefit from the additional appointment.

When booking your prom makeup appointment you can inquire if a trial appointment would be beneficial for you, or maybe we can assuage your concerns without you needing one.

How far in advance should I book my trial makeup?

Your trial appointment can be booked at any time convenient for your schedule, but we always suggest that it be at least a couple of months before your prom night so you can have time to make sure you love every detail of your makeup. This will give you time to talk with your makeup artist if you have any thoughts about changing your makeup and have them prepare for those changes.

It’s also a great idea to plan your trial appointment for significant events leading up to your prom night, such as graduation photos, birthday parties, family gatherings, etc. This way, you can look just as spectacular for one of those events.

I have concerns about skin sensitivity. What should I do?

When you book Waring Makeup for your prom makeup, one of the first questions we have for our clients is if they have any skin sensitivities or allergies we should be aware of. It gives us the ability to work with you to figure out what will be the best products to use for your makeup session. This can be further addressed during your trial appointment so you can provide feedback to your artist regarding any discomforts you may have with the makeup used and will switch it for your prom night. Our ability to understand our client’s skin needs allows us to make sure you will feel and look your best.

Are you experienced with all skin tones?

Absolutely! Waring Makeup prides itself on working with a diverse range of clients and can accomplish the same high-quality work for every client no matter what skin tone they have. We have a complete kit of makeup suited to work with every skin tone and a foundation for every undertone. In addition, our portfolio page showcases a wide range of diversity without clients and should help alleviate any concerns you might have when booking your makeup artist.

I have scarring on my face, and I’m worried about texture. Are you able to cover up acne or scars?

Our goal is that your makeup artist should understand what concerns you have before your application starts so we can make you feel your best. Waring Makeup strives to make sure its clients feel comfortable sharing those concerns with us and being transparent on the best way to achieve the right look for you. Our skin preparation treatments will help the makeup apply smoothly and create a lasting look, while the products we use should help cover any scars or discolourations.

Do you offer tattoo cover-ups? If so, how long does it take?

Tattoo cover-ups are one of the many services we offer for our clients. The time it will add to your appointment can vary due to the tattoo’s size, colour, location, and potential scarring. It will also cause the price of the tattoo cover-up to vary. Before booking, inquire about any possible tattoos you would like to cover up. This service requires a description of the tattoo, its location, and a photo of it ahead of your appointment.

Are you able to travel to my location?

Yes! Waring Makeup artists can travel to whatever location is easiest for clients to have their makeup done. Areas could include your home or alternative venues where you and your party are preparing for the big night. Applicable travel fees will be applied to your quote based on the distance required to travel.

Before Your Appointment

Should I come wearing my own makeup to my appointment?

When a painter starts a new piece of art, they want to have a blank canvas. Therefore, we strongly recommend that our clients have a clean bare face before their makeup session. It allows your artist to apply the skin preparation properly and create the perfect flawless look for you. Removing existing makeup prior to applying new makeup means your skin will be agitated and less likely to receive the fresh makeup properly.

What do I need to do before my appointment?

In the weeks leading up to your appointment, it’s essential that you provide your makeup artist with images or inspirations for the type of makeup you’re looking to get done. It helps your artist understand how to give you the best look possible and explain what modifications might need to be made based on other considerations.

The night before your appointment, it’s essential to exfoliate your skin to help improve the skin preparation treatment, which will assist in making your makeup flow smoothly and evenly.

On the day of your appointment, just come as you are, clean bare face, no makeup required!

What should I expect on the day of my prom?

Your makeup artist will arrive up to 15 minutes before your appointment at the agreed-upon location. This allows your artist to make sure they can set up their supplies and have proper lighting for your sessions. Ensure you have a clean designated area ready for your artist when they arrive and comfortable seating for you and others.

How long should I expect my makeup to take?

Usually, it will take 45 to 60 minutes to complete your prom makeup.

If you're booking for a prom party, it’s essential to coordinate with your party a schedule that everyone can agree to make sure no one’s makeup application runs late or needs to be shortened.

What makeup look would you suggest for me?

Every client has different expectations of which look will be the best for them. This is why we have our clients provide reference photos ahead of their appointment. This way, you can collaborate with your makeup artist to create the perfect look for your prom. You can rest assured that with over a decade of industry experience Waring Makeup can help guide you to feel confident about deciding on which look will be best for you.

How can you make my makeup last all night and look good in photos?

The secret to lasting makeup starts with proper skin care and preparation before the makeup is applied. All our makeup services come with skin preparation or our premium skin preparation package to ensure your skin is ready to support a makeup application. Next is making sure high-quality products are used that have a track record of longevity for wear so you can avoid mishaps like your mascara bleeding everywhere. Finally, using a setting spray or finishing powder will help lock in your perfect look.

If you’re nervous about looking perfect throughout your evening, touch-up kits are always a great option to help put your mind at ease for your big night.

Should I get eyelashes extension or use strip lashes?

Lashes are a personal preference for every client, but there are a couple of things to consider ahead of time. First, if you’ve had lash extensions before and love how they look, go for it! However, if you’ve never had lash extensions before, we strongly recommend not getting them the day before your prom. It could lead to an unexpected allergic reaction or not loving the look they give you (i.e. being too heavy or thick).

Strip lashes or single lashes can be a great alternative with lots of different styles to help complement the look you want to achieve for your prom night. Waring Makeup offers a wide range of lash options, and you can discuss these options further during the lead up to your appointment. The other great advantage of these lashes is that they can easily be removed at the night’s end and can be a lot lighter on the eyes, especially if you typically don’t wear lashes.

I have some favourite makeup products. Can we use mine?

We can always work with our clients to incorporate their favourite products into their final look, whether you have a particular lipstick shade or eye shadow colour in mind. Just let us know ahead of time, preferably before your appointment, and we will create the perfect look for you.

What brands of makeup products do you use?

While I have a wide range of products in my makeup kit, a few of my favourite brands include MAC Cosmetics, Too Faced, Makeup Forever, Morphe, and Duwop Cosmetics.
